Love and its Languages

Love and its Languages

If 10 individuals of different social and economical backgrounds, races and gender were to be asked what does love, valentine’s day and relationships mean to them, it is safe to say that no two of them will be able to provide the same answer. Some, who have yet to have the chance to experience it or believe in it might not even be able to give meaning to it yet. The definition of love may vary from individual to individual but one thing is for sure, no one is in control of the who, when and how it happens. Be it because of the golden arrow of Cupid or even through DNA tests like in the novel ‘The One’ by John Marrs, most of us tend to yearn for the day to finally meet the perfect one, or as some would call it – Destined Soulmate.  When that happens, it just does and it tends to ‘feel right’. As John Green, the author of ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ would put it, “I fell in love the way you fall asleep: Slowly, and then all at once.”

Gabby Petito: The hunt for Justice

Gabby Petito: The hunt for Justice

Pepper spray. Penknife. Wedged keys between white knuckles. Eyes trained low and hurried steps. These are a list of basic things the average woman has memorized close to muscle memory. These are the things women are trained to understand and adopt as a means to survive in a world where violence and assault are about as common as tripping on your own two feet out of crowded spaces. However, it seems that these perpetrators of violence against women extend beyond just creepy strangers on the street. Sometimes danger lurks nearer than one might believe. Or worse, it might just be the least suspected or most trusted ones that end up washing their guilt-stained hands with bleach. Such is the tragic case of the killing of Gabby Petito.

Yay or Nay: Fiction has diluted what a relationship looks like

Yay or Nay: Fiction has diluted what a relationship looks like

It’s that time of the month again! This month’s edition of Yay or Nay will be covering an arousing topic on relationships. Have you ever swooned over an OTP (one true pairing), wishing that you had their lives? Remember the scenes when any main male or female lead looked at their partner’s eyes, filled with love and grew old together? These fairytale-like scenes have etched their way into our minds and have inspired Echo’s very own bachelorettes to debate on whether fairytales have diluted modern-day relationships.

Re-educating Educators: Make School A Safer Place

Re-educating Educators: Make School A Safer Place

For years the excuses of humour and sensibilities have been thrust around as a means of justifying inappropriate remarks regarding sexual harassment and assault. These harsh statements masked behind attempts at comicality become even more complex to disassemble when they are employed by authoritative figures such as educators, making its recipients inclined to remain silent due to the imbalance in the power dynamics as well as the risk of severe consequences. Nevertheless, recent revelations have proven that many actions can be taken in order to combat these injustices and silence is no longer an option in the face of rights transgressions, especially once solidarity is achieved.
