Throughout the 2nd week of October 2018, Sunway University and Sunway College hosted the big event that sports enthusiasts had been gearing up for; Sunway Sports Carnival! All of the athletes were eager to compete with each other in their respective sports such as football, captain’s ball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, dodgeball, chess and the fitness challenge.
However, first, the opening ceremony was held. The ceremony, though originally intended to be held on the football field, had to be moved to the Jeffrey Cheah Hall due to the unfavourable weather. Even in bad weather, the students were still showing their enthusiasm towards sport!
The event first started with Malaysia’s national anthem. It was then followed by Sunway’s proud and talented cheerleading team that helped set up the competitive spirits among those who were in JC Hall.
Senior Executive Director Dr Elizabeth Lee gave the opening speech, in which she explained that sports is not all about winning, but also to promote cooperation. She reminded the athletes that the carnival is not only to showcase their talents and skills, but also to display good sportsmanship, make new friends and also to learn something from their participation in sports.
Of course, every sports carnival is supposed to have special opening ceremony. Initially the event was to include flame torch lighting in the opening ceremony, but it was impossible to hold it in the Jeffrey Cheah Hall. They proceeded to continue the opening ceremony with running the flag onto the stage ceremony. Sunway’s two beloved mascots, Samson and Sophia were there to hype the event up.
After the officiating ceremony, and before the athletes proceeded to their respective sports, photo sessions were held for all the athletes and staffs.
Of course, warm up exercises are vital before sports. After the photo session, students were asked to do some basic warm-ups, to get them finally geared up for their tournament!
The opening ceremony for sports carnival finally ended after the warm-up exercises. The athletes then headed to their respective sports, hoping to win their tournaments. We wish them all the best!
