She acknowledges  their academic achievements as well as  the personal growth they had experienced throughout their time at university. Professor Robinson  notes that the graduates now possess the tools to reason, think critically and analytically and present persuasive arguments—skills that will serve them well in their future careers. Reflecting on the partnership between the two institutions, which began in 2005, Professor Robinson emphasised its growth in collaborative research and the enriching teaching and learning experiences it offers. She noted that from a modest cohort of just 21 students in 1987, the institution has grown exponentially, with over 7,000 students now enrolled in programs leading to both qualifications. She celebrated Lancaster University’s esteemed position in the top 10 of the UK Guide 2025 and its QS 2025 ranking within the top 150 universities globally. As she concludes her speech, she reminds the graduates that their degrees represent both an end and a new beginning, serving as a passport to a lifetime of opportunities.

On the last day of the convocation ceremony, we had  Professor Andrew Abbott, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, who congratulated the graduates. He praised their achievements, noting not only the knowledge they had gained but also their ability to adapt, solve problems, and show resilience. He emphasised that today marks the start of their journey as alumni of their alma mater, with their degree acting as a gateway to a lifetime of opportunities.

The graduates are then presented on stage to be awarded their degrees and conferred degrees validated by Lancaster University to those whose degrees relate to it. Graduates from varying schools of Sunway University were presented their degrees on the following respective days; Day 1 being Sunway Business School students with the exception of those from the BAF, BFA, BFE, and BFIN programs.  Day 2 was also followed by the remaining Sunway Business School students and those from the School of Hospitality and Service Management. The third day was dedicated to celebrating the achievements of the graduates from the School of Arts (SOA), School of Education (SOE), and School of Medical and Life Sciences (SMLS), while the last day was dedicated to celebrating the achievements of the graduates from the Sunway School of Engineering and Technology (SET) and the Sunway School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS).

Graduates were encouraged to embrace the opportunities that awaited them, to pursue their passions with fervour, and to contribute positively to society. The importance of lifelong learning was emphasised, reinforcing the idea that education does not end with graduation but continues throughout one’s life. If one listened closely enough, throughout the ceremony, the harmonious blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian music could be heard in the background, signalling the unity and appreciation for every culture represented among the graduates, without discrimination. This musical backdrop served as a reminder of the diverse community that Sunway University fosters, celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures that contribute to the institution’s vibrant atmosphere.

Highest academic scholars and stellar students were presented with the Tan Sri Dato Seri Sir Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Awards, and a selected few truly inspiring students were awarded the highly distinguished Lancaster University Chancellor’s Medallists. Undoubtedly, a true convocation can never fail to end without the dignified valedictorian. The valedictorians for each day had the opportunity to present their speech, signifying the greatest moment for the event.

In a moment of great significance, the proclamation of graduates as members of the Sunway alumni is made by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Elizabeth Lee. This moment marked a transition, as graduates were instructed to officially switch the position of their tassels from right to left, symbolising their new status as alumni. It is important to carry the core values of Sunway with you wherever you may go. Firstly, strive for excellence in everything you undertake; secondly, uphold the highest standards of integrity in all your dealings; and thirdly, always act with humility, ensuring that you are truly valued and appreciated by everyone around you. The Sunway Alumni Relations team extends a warm welcome to all present today. Once a Sunwayian, always a Sunwayian. Thus, remember the way of the sun, for it is the brightest star in the galaxy. As we celebrate the conclusion of today’s ceremony, let us indulge in some fun and festivities, honouring the brightest new stars among us.

As the four day ceremony  drew to a close, the celebration continued with joy and laughter, marking the end of a significant chapter in their lives. Graduates stood to express their gratitude to family and friends, bowing deeply in respect and appreciation. The iconic cap toss followed with phones raised to capture this once-in-a-lifetime moment. Laughter, screams of delight, and radiant smiles filled the amphitheatre, creating an atmosphere of pure euphoria.

The formal proceedings of the ceremony are then concluded, and the stage party departs. The academic procession retires as everyone stands to fully embrace the significance of the days. Graduates then make their way to Sunway Lagoon to capture photographs and share meals with their loved ones. Some choose to revisit the university, recreating and capturing their cherished memories on campus. Emotions ran high, with some shedding tears while others smiled, hugged, or shook hands. Highlights of Day 1

On the first day of Sunway University’s 26th Convocation, YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman Hashim, the esteemed Pro-Chancellor, delivered an eloquent and inspiring address on behalf of YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, the Chancellor. In his speech, the Pro-Chancellor welcomed the newest members of Sunway University’s distinguished alumni, acknowledging their success as a powerful testament to their resilience, unwavering determination, and passion for knowledge. He extended heartfelt gratitude to the pivotal figures in the graduates’ lives, recognizing the invaluable support and sacrifices that had significantly contributed to their remarkable achievements. Furthermore, he underscored the importance of boldness in taking risks, the imperative of upholding integrity, and the pride they should carry as representatives of their alma mater.

Highlighting Sunway University’s extraordinary accomplishments, including its prestigious ranking as the number one private university in Asia and its robust partnership with Lancaster University, the Pro-Chancellor encouraged the graduates to view education as an ongoing journey. In a rapidly evolving world, he emphasised that adaptability and lifelong learning would be their greatest assets. He urged them to uphold the principles of sustainability and social responsibility as they navigate their professional and personal lives. Concluding his address, he reminded the graduates to be courageous, to act with unwavering integrity, and to strive not only for personal success but for the betterment of humanity, carrying the legacy of Sunway University with them as they create their own enduring legacies.

Following this, a captivating video presentation was showcased, highlighting the excellence of the Lancaster-Sunway degree and the vast array of benefits it offers. This visual narrative transcended mere academic qualifications, illustrating how the collaboration between the two esteemed institutions has opened doors to new horizons and boundless opportunities for graduates. The video effectively conveyed the message that the education received at Sunway University, in partnership with Lancaster University, equips students with the essential skills and knowledge required to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape.

Subsequently, the valedictorian, Ms. Vanessa Chong Kai En, from the graduating class of 2024, was introduced to the audience. Vanessa graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in International Business with First Class Honours and additionally earned a Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership from the Chartered Management Institute. Beyond her stellar academic accomplishments, Vanessa demonstrated outstanding leadership and dedication, serving as the General Secretary of the Sunway University Student Council, the Secretary of the Sunway International Business Society, and the Head of Marketing for the Sunway Business School Consilium. Her exceptional contributions and unwavering commitment to excellence truly distinguished her, making her an exemplary representative of her class. In summary, she epitomises being “a class above,” just like all the graduates today.

In her valedictorian address, Vanessa warmly congratulated her peers, acknowledging the immense effort required to reach this significant milestone. She reminded them that they are the authors of their own life stories, urging them never to relinquish control of their narratives to others. Reflecting on their shared journey, she spoke of the excitement and challenges they faced together, with assignments, exams, friendships, and countless cups of coffee filling their chapters, creating a rich tapestry of experiences. Despite encountering unexpected plot twists and academic hurdles, they persevered, making it to this moment by refusing to let circumstances define their potential.

Vanessa candidly acknowledged the highs and lows of their journey, including the all-nighters and the reliance on caffeine to push through, all while balancing on the edge of giving up. She emphasised that perseverance serves as a reminder that being the author of their own stories means embracing challenges as opportunities to grow stronger and soar higher. These very challenges have sculpted their character and paved the way for their greatest achievements. Quoting, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall,” she encouraged her fellow graduates to embrace the unpredictable future with confidence, knowing they are simply “a class above.”

Vanessa expressed her profound gratitude to her parents, grandmother, and sister, as well as to the exceptional lecturers, professors, and friends who supported her along the way, with a special mention of her “green teas.” Above all, she gave the greatest glory to God. She acknowledged that there might be times when they might be tempted to leave the pages of their lives blank, but she urged her peers to seize every opportunity fearlessly, to take control of their narratives, and to write stories that resonate with their goals and aspirations. Vanessa concluded her speech by reminding them that their lives are brimming with endless possibilities and that they possess the power to shape their futures. With this in mind, she encouraged them to step into the world and own their stories, for the best is yet to come.

Highlights of Day 2

Needless to say, the highlight of day 2 was definitely the attendance of the founder of Sunway Group and Sunway University’s Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah. Followed by the academic procession and the national anthem, a video highlighting the chairman’s successes and initiatives in pursuing a sustainable environment while nurturing a bright and secure future for the coming generation was broadcast to the audience.

The video began with an introduction of our founder’s humble beginnings and how he rose to become the nation’s forerunner in ensuring quality education and prioritising sustainable development for the nation’s future well-being by transforming 800 acres of abandoned mining lakes into Sunway City, Southeast Asia’s model-integrated, sustainable township that we have come to know of today. The video continued to explain how the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation was

set up with the aim of nation-building and giving back to society in an impactful way, with RM 670 million having been disbursed as scholarships and forming partnerships with distinguished universities across the globe such as Oxford, Lancaster, Harvard, and so many more.

Through the foundation, organisations such as the Jeffrey Sachs Centre on Sustainable Development and the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health were established. The founder of Sunway Education Group also strives to achieve the SDG mission 4.7 as one of its co-chairs in introducing a sustainability curriculum. Tan Sri has achieved several titles and accolades, such as Knight Commander of the British Empire, co-patron of the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, EY Asean Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, and Officer of the Order of Australia, in addition to 12 honorary doctorates worldwide.

The conclusion of the video signalled the moment for the Chancellor’s speech from Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, who began his address by welcoming his fellow members from the academic procession, graduates, parents, and guardians. He also congratulated the graduates and reminded them to be especially grateful to their lecturers and family, who have unfailingly supported them. He mentioned that the graduates would be embarking on the next chapter of their lives where war, conflict, the climate crisis, and rising socio-economic status have been posing a threat to the very survival of humanity.

Nevertheless, he assures them that although they’re facing an era of uncertainty, in this fast-moving era of technology where AI is employed by nearly 75% of companies and could displace human resources, the imagination, innovation, and creativity developed by these graduates at Sunway University are pivotal. Ethical values nurtured will enable them to maximise these opportunities in the age of AI.

Tan Sri expresses his hopes that, apart from academic achievements, the graduates are instilled with Sunway’s core values of Integrity, Humility and Excellence. These values are crucial in determining whether scholars aim to take on a progressive path or continue the path of destruction with the all-consuming existence of technology. He says that while technology has helped us advance tremendously in economic growth, it does come with a cost.

Sunway and Jeffrey Cheah have fully embraced the SDGs as an initiative to become a more sustainably aware and proactive body, with many students already familiarised with the multiple initiatives carried out, emphasising the commitment of the youth. As such, he is highly optimistic that humanity will rise to face these challenges. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has always emphasised its commitment towards quality education and nation-building, to give back to society.

He looks forward to how these students in front of him; now alumni, will leave a lasting and positive impact in all their ventures and hopes they stay connected to their alma mater. He ends his speech on a positive note, stating that as his personal motto, ‘I inspire to aspire before I expire,’  Tan Sri believes that everyone has a higher purpose in life and hopes that future generations will set forth by holding Sunway’s core value of integrity as a guide, humility as their virtue, and pursuing excellence close to their hearts.

The valedictorian for Day 2, as introduced by the provost, proves to be highly accomplished and has participated and won in several global and national competitions alike. She assisted the national team in the Asia Gelato Cup 2023 and IKA Olympics 2024 and was champion of the Malaysian Tiger-themed competition in Food Hotel Malaysia 2022 as well as World’s Skills Patisserie and Confectionery, Shanghai 2022—all while balancing being the President of Young Chef’s Club.

Cheang Sweetie begins her speech by mentioning how today is a day for celebrating their transition from students to working adults. She wishes her fellow graduates her heartfelt congratulations for their perseverance and dedication, which have led them to this moment. She expresses how honoured she feels and proceeds to extend her gratitude to the Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, for the Young Chef’s Scholarship, which has allowed her to bloom into her full potential despite her initial struggles where she used to fumble across assignments or might even have burned a cookie or two.

Cheang Sweetie carries on to thank her lecturers for propelling her to the right opportunities and her parents for their unwavering support in her choices by introducing her to the pleasures of food and culture. To the invaluable friendships and relationships she has forged from the very beginning, she thanks them for always lending her a hand or their ear. She believes that the bonds she has formed with everyone over the years at Sunway are her culmination to success. She reminds her fellow graduates to treasure what they have learnt from lessons or mistakes and endeavour to provide a meaningful impact to the support they’ve garnered all these years as they embark on a new journey in life. To unfailingly remember their roots and contribute their part to society. She concludes her speech by once again, congratulating everyone and wishing them the best in their future endeavours.

Highlights of Day 3

Following the solemn rendition of the Negaraku, YBhg. Professor Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, the distinguished Pro-Chancellor, formally opened the proceedings with a warm and welcoming address. He commenced by graciously acknowledging the presence of all attendees in the amphitheatre and extending a heartfelt welcome to everyone present. The Pro-Chancellor then turned his attention to the graduates, offering his sincere congratulations for their hard work, dedication, and resilience throughout their academic journey at Sunway University. He emphasised that their commitment had been instrumental in achieving this significant milestone. A round of applause resonated through the venue as he also extended his congratulations to the parents, recognizing their unwavering support and sacrifices that played a crucial role in their children’s success.

Taking a moment to evoke nostalgia, the Pro-Chancellor led the graduates down memory lane, reminding them of their early days at the university—the excitement, the nerves, and the multitude of assignments. These experiences, he noted, have significantly contributed to the growth and development of each student. He then proudly highlighted a remarkable achievement: Sunway University has recently been ranked as the number one private university in terms of teaching and employability, not only in Malaysia but across the entire ASEAN region. He further emphasised that this prestigious ranking had been attained for three consecutive years—a feat he humorously referred to as a “hat trick” in football terms.

Sharing personal insights, the Pro-Chancellor challenged the graduates to engage in what he termed the “game of the impossible.” He encouraged them to set ambitious goals that may seem unattainable with current methods, urging them to innovate and explore different approaches to overcome these challenges. He also mentioned his and his son’s podcast, “The Game of the Impossible,” where they offer advice on achieving seemingly impossible goals.

In conclusion, the Pro-Chancellor underscored the importance of continuous learning, emphasising that education marks the beginning, not the end, of the lifelong pursuit of knowledge. He urged the graduates to strive for innovation and to believe in their capacity to make meaningful impacts in their workplaces. He also reminded them of the significance of maintaining exemplary behaviour as they move forward in their careers. With these final words of wisdom, the Pro-Chancellor concluded his speech.

The ceremony then progressed to the announcement of the valedictorian, Ms. Shireen Faheed Qassem Abu Nejra. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedicine with First Class Honours and was not only an academic star but also the President of the Sunway Debate Club and the Director of Extracurricular Activities in the Sunway University Council. Additionally, she was honoured as the Debater of the Year in 2022 and was a member of the highest-ranked Asian debate team at the World Debating Championship in 2024.

As Ms. Shireen took to the stage and greeted the distinguished guests, she began her speech by reminiscing about the emotions everyone experienced when COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, and Sunway University resumed its vibrant campus life. She light-heartedly remarked that while Malaysia enjoys abundant sunlight, not every day is filled with sunshine and rainbows. There were stormy days when students faced various challenges and questioned their paths. Yet, despite these trials, all the graduates found themselves wondering where the time had gone.

Source: Manreet

Ms. Shireen expressed how Sunway University had made her feel a deep sense of belonging. She extended her gratitude to the Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, for making the seemingly impossible possible, commending the university’s unwavering dedication to building an ecosystem that offers some of the best education in the world. She expressed her appreciation for the numerous opportunities Sunway had provided her, noting that this privilege had instilled in her a strong sense of purpose to uphold her values wherever she goes.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Shireen wished her fellow graduates a bright future, encouraging them to cherish the memories and experiences that Sunway had given them. She affirmed that being a Sunwayian is a lifelong privilege, and reunions with friends are not a matter of “if” but “when” and “where.” Reflecting on her university years, she concluded by saying that, while she doesn’t miss those days, she will never forget them, and that all graduates, including herself, will remain Sunwayians for the rest of their lives. With these heartfelt words, Ms. Shireen brought her speech to a close.

Highlights of Day 4

YBhg. Professor Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, the Pro-Chancellor, inaugurated the proceedings with a compelling welcome address that resonated with the audience through his commanding and warm presence. With eloquence, he guided the graduates on a reflective journey back to their initial days at Sunway University, rekindling memories of the excitement and anxiety that marked the beginning of their academic endeavours. As he reminisced about their triumphs and challenges, Professor Jala underscored how these experiences have been instrumental in shaping their growth and development into future leaders.

He urged the graduates to set their sights high, encouraging them to challenge themselves with goals that might initially seem unattainable. This approach, he explained, would spark their capacity for innovation, pushing them to discover new avenues to success. Standing at the threshold of limitless possibilities, he inspired them to let their entrepreneurial spirit guide them towards making impactful contributions. Education, he emphasised, is merely the foundation upon which they will build their futures. He called upon them to approach their dreams with fearless determination, embracing their unique perspectives and passions. Invoking the powerful words of Nelson Mandela—“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”—Professor Jala reminded the Class of 2024 that as they step into the world, they should do so with boldness, confidence, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.

As the Sunway University 26th Convocation drew to a close on its fourth day, the spotlight turned to Christensen Choong Ming Jie, the valedictorian of the Sunway School of Engineering and Technology (SET) graduating class of 2024. Christensen, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Information Technology (Computer Networking and Security) with First Class Honours, had distinguished himself not only through academic excellence but also through his remarkable leadership and community service as the External Relations Executive of the Sunway University Student Council, Vice-President of the Sunway Rotaract Club, and Event Manager for the World Rotaract Week Conference. Notably, as the organising chairperson of the Bandar Sunway Multiple Sclerosis Charity Walk, Christensen led a team that raised over RM20,000 in support of the MS community in Malaysia. His achievements and contributions have fostered a nurturing, supportive, and caring community, making him a true standout—a class above, much like all the graduates celebrated that day.

Source: Manreet

With poise and eloquence, Christensen delivered a speech that not only reflected on the journey of the graduates but also provided a roadmap for the future, emphasising the core values that had shaped their academic and personal lives. He began by expressing profound gratitude to the Chancellor, Sunway University, and the Honourable Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO, whose dedication to education and unwavering contributions to society have left an indelible mark on countless lives. Christensen also extended heartfelt thanks to his family and friends, whose kindness, unwavering support, and love had been his anchor throughout his academic journey. He acknowledged that it was their dedication and understanding during his lowest moments that pushed him beyond his limits, helping shape the person he had become today. Fondly reminiscing about the late-night study sessions and shared academic victories, he noted that these memories would be cherished forever.

Central to his address was a reflection on the three core ethical values that Sunway University instils in its students: integrity, humility, and excellence. Christensen shared how his understanding of these values had deepened over time. He explained that integrity extends beyond honesty—it is about doing the right thing in the right way, without hesitation, in all circumstances. Humility, once seen simply as being modest, now represented a willingness to learn and listen to individuals from diverse backgrounds. While pride in one’s achievements is natural, he emphasised the importance of not boasting about them. Excellence, according to Christensen, is more than just outstanding performance in chosen fields; it is a dedication to strive for the best results and a willingness to go above and beyond in meeting the expectations of all stakeholders to whom commitments have been made.

Drawing from his own experiences, Christensen likened life to a marathon filled with highs and lows. He advised his fellow graduates to stay humble during the highs, never underestimating anyone’s potential, and to maintain integrity by resisting harmful temptations that could derail their progress. Regardless of their current achievements, Christensen encouraged his peers to continually strive for greater excellence, recognising that there is always a higher peak to climb. He cautioned that often, the greatest enemy lies within—a fixed and limited mindset.

Quoting Sun Tzu’s *The Art of War*, Christensen reminded the graduates that knowing both their enemy and themselves would allow them to emerge unscathed through a hundred battles. During the lows, he urged resilience and optimism, viewing every challenge as an opportunity for growth. He assured his audience that with time, they would soar higher than ever before.

In his closing remarks, Christensen poignantly marked the end of their university journey and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. He called on his fellow graduates to embrace every challenge with resilience and determination, allowing their dreams to guide them while never losing sight of their goals. Acknowledging that the journey ahead may be tough, he affirmed that with perseverance, anything is achievable. His final words were a rallying cry for courage and self-belief: “Be bold, be brave, and always believe in yourself.”

As the applause echoed through the amphitheatre, it was evident that Christensen’s speech had resonated deeply with everyone present. His words, grounded in the values of integrity, humility, and excellence, served as a fitting conclusion to the convocation ceremony, inspiring the graduates of 2024 to embark on their next adventures with confidence and determination.
