Session #01

Dr. Stuart: Since this is our first session together, let’s start off with a simple question. What brought you here?
Patient: I’m here because [sighs] I think I’m losing the people that are close to me.
Dr. Stuart: And what makes you say that?
Patient: I don’t know. It’s just a feeling, I guess. It’s like they fade when I’m near them, and every time it happens, I know I’m going to lose someone. So please, doctor, you have to help me.
Dr. Stuart: I will try my best to help you, Mr. Howard. But first, I need to know why you think you’re losing them.
Patient: Because I–
[silence 23s]
Patient: What if—I’m not losing them. And they’re taken away from me.
Dr. Stuart: Taken?
Patient: Yes. Last week, when it happened, there was someone else in the room. But I couldn’t get a clear view of its face because of the lights. Then it just… took her.
Dr. Stuart: Who was taken away?
Patient: My girlfriend.
Dr. Stuart: Hmm. Can you walk me through what happened, from the moment you entered the room?
Patient: I remember I was coming home from work, and my girlfriend was already in the living room watching a movie. So, naturally I went and sat down next to her. And we talked for a bit.
Dr. Stuart: What did you talk about?
Patient: [chuckles] You know, just the typicals. Like what I did at work, some sweet nothings and our plans for tomorrow. Then, because it was getting quite late, she said she was tired and went to bed first. But then, I suddenly remembered I had something really important to tell her, so I stopped her in her tracks. [Pause] And that was when ‘it’ appeared.
Dr. Stuart: When you say ‘it’, are you referring to a person?
Patient: I–I don’t know. It was too bright to see anything.
Dr. Stuart: Okay. What did ‘it’ do?
Patient: It crawled behind her… and everything got brighter. I couldn’t see her anymore. I frantically reached towards her to pull her out of there. I tried so hard to pull her out, but ‘it’ was stronger than me.
Dr. Stuart: What happened then?
Patient: …She let go of my hand.
[silence 38s]
Dr. Stuart: Mr. Howard?
Patient: Yes?
Dr. Stuart: You said the lights obscured its face.
Patient: Yes I did.
Dr. Stuart: Were the lights already on?
Patient: …
No.

Dr. Stuart: Whenever you’re ready, Mr. Howard.
[silence 35s]
Dr. Stuart: Mr. Howard? Mr. Howard?
Patient: Hm?
Dr. Stuart: Is everything okay? Do you need a break? We can start again in fifteen minutes.
Patient: No- no. We can start now.
Dr. Stuart: Are you sure? If you feel unwell anytime during the session, just let me know, okay?
Patient: Yes of course, I’m fine.
Dr. Stuart: Have you seen ‘it’ again since the last session?
Patient: Yes.
Dr. Stuart: Did ‘it’ take her away this time too?
Patient: Yes.
Dr. Stuart: Did you see its face?
Patient: No.
Dr. Stuart: Because the lights were blocking it?
Patient: N–No. There was no light this time.
Dr. Stuart: Oh? But you still couldn’t see its face?
Patient: No. I–
[silence 49s]
Dr. Stuart: Mr. Howard?
Patient: I couldn’t see it properly. I’m sorry.
Dr. Stuart: Oh, don’t be sorry. That is completely fine. I’m sure you tried your best.
Patient: …
Dr. Stuart: I notice that you keep looking above my head. Is there anything on my head?
Patient: No, it’s nothing.
Dr. Stuart: Hm. Alright. Now, can you tell me how often ‘it’ shows up?
Patient: I’m not sure, but it’s showing up a lot more lately.
Dr. Stuart: How about your girlfriend? Is she still coming over to your house?
Patient: No. I told her not to come over anymore.
Dr. Stuart: Is she aware of ‘it’?
Patient: I don’t know.
Dr. Stuart: You don’t know?
Patient: I never told her about it.
Dr. Stuart: Okay. [pause] After that night, what changed between the two of you?
Patient: Please– I just– I don’t know.
Dr. Stuart: So she stayed the same?
Patient: [breathing heavily] May–maybe?
Dr. Stuart: Mr. Howard? You don’t seem very well. We could stop here, if you’d prefer.
Patient: I know. I know. Please! Can you just stop talking, I beg you!
[silence 57s]
[heavy breathing]
Patient: I–I’m sorry. Would you excuse me?
Dr. Stuart: Of course.
[door opens and closes]

Session #03

[Transcript Begins]
Dr. Stuart: I thought you’d never come by again, Mr. Howard.
Patient: [chuckles nervously] I’m sorry about last time.
Dr. Stuart: Apologies noted.
Patient: Can I ask you something?
Dr. Stuart: Go ahead.
Patient: Do you think people can just…stop loving someone?
Dr. Stuart: That’s a difficult question. Why do you ask that?
Patient: Because I think that’s what happened.
Dr. Stuart: What makes you think that?
[silence 26s]
Patient: But that’s not what happened. It couldn’t be.
Dr. Stuart: Would you like to talk about it?
Patient: My girlfriend—she looked numb. As if ‘it’ had swallowed all the light in her. ‘It’ was torturing her, but she was smiling.
Dr. Stuart: Smiling?
Patient: Yes. The kind of smile that never reached her eyes. Then, I saw, in the tears that welled up in her eyes, the reflection of ‘it’ haunting her. She stopped finishing her sentence, she smiled every time I looked at her, but it felt empty. That was when I knew ‘it’ had started feeding on her.
Dr. Stuart: And what happened afterwards?
Patient: ‘It’ took her somewhere I couldn’t reach.
Dr. Stuart: Did you go after her?
Patient: I tried to.
[silence 15s]
Dr. Stuart: You keep looking above my head again.
Patient: …
Patient: They’re talking.
Dr. Stuart: Who?
Patient: The Murns.
Dr. Stuart: The Murns?
Patient: Yours is quieter today.
Dr. Stuart: I’m sorry?
Patient: Your Murn. He usually talks over you.
Dr. Stuart: What does it say?
Patient: …
It says you’re starting to believe me.

Dr. Stuart: During the last session, you mentioned something about a Murn. Can you tell me what it is?
Patient: You don’t know what a Murn is?
Dr. Stuart: Am I supposed to?
Patient: …I guess. Anyways, you only have to know this about them.
Dr. Stuart: What?
Patient: That they talk. A lot.
Dr. Stuart: Hmm. Last week you also said mine was quieter. What does that mean?
Patient: It’s quieter because it has less to say.
Dr. Stuart: About what?
Patient: About me.
[silence 13s]
Dr. Stuart: I’m curious, does everyone have a Murn?
Patient: Most people do.
Dr. Stuart: And you know someone who doesn’t have one.
Patient: Yes. My girlfriend.
Dr. Stuart: Oh. Do you know why?
Patient: Because she loves me?
Dr. Stuart: You don’t sound very sure.
Patient: [sighs] It’s because I don’t know. Happy?
Dr. Stuart: It’s okay to not know the answer sometimes.
Patient: [Breaths] I know.
Dr. Stuart: What do they usually say?
Patient: Depends.
Dr. Stuart: On?
Patient: On the person.
Dr. Stuart: Have they ever been wrong?
[silence 16s]
Dr. Stuart: Mr. Howard? Who are you talking to?
[silence 40s]
Patient: … All I know is that they’ve never forgiven me when they do.

Clerk: Please make yourself comfortable, Mr. Howard. Dr. Stuart is currently attending to another patient and will be with you in a minute. Would you like a cup of water while you wait?
Patient: No, I’m fine. Thank you.
Clerk: Alright. Well, I’ll be outside if you need anything else.
[silence 120s]
Patient: …
No.
…
[silence 43s]
Patient: Don’t.
…
Patient: She wouldn’t say that.
…
I know.
…
I know.
Dr. Stuart: Sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. Howard.
[Chair creaks]
Dr. Stuart: Hmm. You seem a little different today. Did something happen?
Patient: I’ve been thinking about what you said.
Dr. Stuart: About your girlfriend?
Patient: … About what changed.
Dr. Stuart: And what did you come up with?
Patient: What if nobody took her?
Dr. Stuart: What do you mean?
Patient: Like… I don’t know. They’re saying that she left. But I don’t—I don’t even know who to believe anymore. Sometimes I even wonder if they lie just to make me feel worse.
Dr. Stuart: By ‘they’, do you mean the Murns?
Patient: They never, ever say anything good. Their mouths are full of hate, and they’re always telling me that I’m not good enough. They’re always telling me I’m the problem. They’re always—
Dr. Stuart: And what do you believe?
[Heavy breathing]
Patient: That you’re the worst. You know that?
[Door slams shut]

Dr. Stuart: Am I?

Dr. Stuart: Before we get into it, I just want to say thank you for gathering the courage to come here again, Mr. Howard. I do apologise for pressing too hard on you the last session.
Patient: Hm.
Dr. Stuart: [Pause] Okay. Let’s try this again from the top. When did you see your first Murn?
Patient: It was too long ago. Almost as if I was born with it.
Dr. Stuart: Who had it?
Patient: It doesn’t matter. Knowing it wouldn’t change anything nor would it help me in any way.
Dr. Stuart: I know this is hard for you, but I promise I’m doing this to help you. And to do that I have to understand you better.
Patient: …
[silence 22s]
Dr. Stuart: You’re doing it again. They’re listening aren’t they?
Patient: You don’t know what you’re talking about.
Dr. Stuart: My Murn. They’re talking to you, am I right?
Patient: …
Dr. Stuart: Will you not tell me anything anymore?
Patient: You always say things like this, but you don’t really mean it. And I know that because I can hear…everything.
Dr. Stuart: What do I really mean then?
[pause]
Patient: You want me gone. That you dread coming to every session with my name on it because everything I say annoys you. Because—you’re tired of me.
[silence 3m]
Dr. Stuart: Will you still hear me out?
Patient: …
Dr. Stuart: I think you are very hard on yourself.
Patient: You don’t know anything.
Dr. Stuart: I also think that you know exactly what a Murn is.

Session #07
Date: 30 May 2026

Patient: Do you want to hear a story?
Dr. Stuart: Sure.
Patient: Once, there was a boy who believed that everyone could hear his thoughts.
Dr. Stuart: …
Patient: And every time it happened, he imagined there was a tiny person perched on top of their heads. This tiny person would have a mouth that grew bigger than its head, whispering everything they hated about him.
Patient: After a while… the tiny person became a reality. He’d have his own name, his own thoughts, his own identity. When it became unbearable, the boy would hide himself in his own home, refusing to see anyone.
Patient: But in the silence, their mouths only grew larger, until eventually, they had only a mouth left. Then, they would start eating on the boy’s heart.
Dr. Stuart: What happened to the boy at the end?
Patient: He never believed anyone who said they loved him.
[pause]
Patient: She never had one. Until the end.
Dr. Stuart: What changed?
Patient: I think… I finally started putting one above her head.
Dr. Stuart: Thank you for telling me.
