What one becomes

One drop falls, a quiet start,
One ripple wakes the water’s heart.
Two circles meet, then drift apart,
Three waves rise beneath the stars.

Five currents pull, then intertwine,
Eight tides return in endless time.
 Thirteen shells along the shore,
Each one shaped by waves before.

Twenty-one ripples cross the blue,
Each carrying what once was two.
 Thirty-four waves reach the sand,
Built from beginnings small and bland

Fifty-five tides roll to the shore,
Yet every wave still asks for more
 Eighty-nine turns beneath the foam,
And every ending leads it home.

A drop could never know the sea
Nor what its smallest ripple’d be.
 Yet from one comes infinity,
 A pattern growing endlessly.
