THE MAN WHO LOOKED BACK

A condition, but a punishment more like

To save what cannot be taken twice– a life

A backwards glance made an unthinkable crime

To my lover whose beauty a paradigm

In an unfamiliar land of stark shadows

I best believe in the grit I must follow

But when there is only silence, what do I know?

As I reach the end, will she still be in tow?

When the beginnings of doubt corrupt and seize

Previous trust morphs into false reality

By nature so would you, with no guarantee

Misfortunate decisions come with bleak ease

The vile temptation I’m not able to soothe

With only a look, she falls right into doom

An act of love drives me back to solitude

I am a weak man, that truth is conclusive
