Daedalus, the Inventor, forged wings from feathers and wax to free his son, Icarus, from being held captive on Crete. He cautioned Icarus against soaring too close to the sun, but in the original tale, he also warned him against soaring too close to the sea – too high and the wax could melt, too low and the winds would send him crashing into the waves.
