SPM: Without Sekolah Edition

SPM: Without Sekolah Edition

“Calling all Form Five students of 2020! You did it!”

With the pandemic going on, 2020s SPM students had it rough. What was supposed to be a 1 year long worth of classes to prep for SPM became 14 months until SPM 2020 started. It was the SPM to be remembered through the decades, as it is the longest annual SPM in the history of Malaysia. With all the postponing and switching to online classes, this batch of students went through fire and water just to sit for this exam. And all was worth it when the results day came on 10 June 2021.

Speak Our Language—Language, Culture, Social Media and Mental Health

Speak Our Language—Language, Culture, Social Media and Mental Health

The role of language is fascinating, yet overlooked and understated. Language can be a barrier, or a bridge. Even grudgingly, it is used as a measure of intelligence or sophistication. English speakers are seen as being more sophisticated and intelligent as knowing this language is like the opening of doors across the world; yet, not knowing other languages potentially closes us off from exploring the literature or shows produced in those languages. Would we be able to fully understand and enjoy anime without subtitles, for example? Surely we can understand universal non-verbal communication or guess the story based on context, but subtitles allow us to immerse ourselves in the river of experience. Even so, translations are quite limited—we’re missing the intricacies of the original version; we can only bathe in a river, but not the sea.

The Fine Line Between Tradition and Human Rights

The Fine Line Between Tradition and Human Rights

What is ‘Tradition’?

Tradition is yet another building block that makes up an individual’s identity, nestled snugly in between culture and beliefs. For many years we’ve been programmed to respect and honour our traditions as they represent the very roots of our family trees. Yet, rarely have we stopped to ponder what tradition actually is. Is it a set of routine practices, carried out repetitively from one generation to the next? Or is it something greater, something that our ancestors deemed to be a means of survival, something of great importance that foregoing it would lead to drastic consequences?

People often say that most of the time, the world works like clockwork: things always happen the way they were meant to. However, if any one person were asked over a year ago what they had imagined their next decade would look like, no one would have an accurate answer on depicting the following months, days or even years. No one would have foreseen the world at a complete standstill, at its wits’ end. No one would call this clockwork. It has been 523 days since COVID-19 was first reported in Wuhan, China. 447 days (as of 8th June 2021) since the very genesis of Malaysia’s MCOs and yet here we are, almost 500 days later, back at square one.

Real Talk: Islamophobia

Real Talk: Islamophobia

Lurking within the manifold layers of society is a kindling animosity that once ignited, may give rise to a destructive hate. This animosity goes by the name Islamophobia and has become a widely used term in political and social climates. In many countries, followers of Islam are often perceived as a collective “other”; a group of people who don’t quite belong or fit into society. Because of these ‘othering’ tendencies, Muslims are often subjected to intersectional microaggressions and hate crimes which may bring about many psychological impacts.
