The Last Straw Marketplace

As we have hit the year 2020, single-use plastics are constantly being dumped into the ocean or not properly allocated. This has become a concerning issue not only for the older generation but for the future generation as well. After many heartbreaking incidents of plastic straws getting stuck onto a turtle’s nostrils, it has brought awareness throughout the globe that plastic straws are harmful to sea creatures. Thus, environmentalists have joined forces to deal with this concerning issue.

From the 2nd of March till the 6th of March 2020, Sunway Branding Department, with the help of Sunway Environmental Society, worked together in organizing #TheLastStraw marketplace which hosted various interesting booths right here in the Boulevard.

5 Common Misconceptions: Debunked

While most of us were growing up, some people would have told us things that were (questionably) beyond belief, probably earning them an “are you sure about that?” raised eyebrow. It could be the simplest of things such as the different taste zones of our tongue, the “fact” that egg yolks are fattening, that bats are really blind, and that the Great Wall of China is visible from space.

Love Languages Crash Course

For those unacquainted with the term, a “love language” is an expression of affection. The idea was founded by marriage counsellor Gary Chapman, who wrote a book – The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts. In his book, Chapman categorized the ways people express and accept love and affection into 5 different categories: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch.

You might be thinking something along the lines of I’m just in college! I don’t even have a boyfriend/girlfriend! How would this even be useful for me?

Parasite: Poverty & Privilege

Oscar Best Picture Nominee, Parasite, directed by Bong Joon-Ho is an outstanding Korean film that delves into the nuances of the class divide with wit and level-headedness. The story focuses on two families, one filthy rich, one (literally) filthy poor, and how the relationship between these two is akin to a parasite. One leeching off the life force of another.

Who is the parasite though?

College 101: Expectations vs Reality

Ah the new year, how most of us longed for it! To many, the start of the new year (and also a new decade) means new possibilities, resolutions that we won’t follow, and 2020 planners that we’ll forget about in 2 months. However, for many people (particularly those between the ages of 16-22) it also means starting college, and what better way to start off the new year than the dawning realisation that you’re entering a new and unfamiliar world of academia which will leave you in a puddle of your own tears and/or overdue assignments.

23:59 Fashion Drama

23:59 Fashion Drama was an event formed by Sunway University’s year three Communication students specializing under Public Relations. The event’s purpose was to combine fashion and drama in order to send a strong message about global warming and it’s irreversible consequences. In fact, even the name of the event, 23:59, symbolizes that we are reaching the end and therefore must “reset the clock” before the next minute strikes.

UN Rock the Goals Concert: Shine a Light on Sustainability

Rock The Goals – Malaysia’s Biggest United Nations Concert was held on the 25th of September 2019 in JC Hall, Sunway University. The concert was held to raise awareness towards the achievement of the 17 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in conjunction with the celebration of  the 4th anniversary of the 17 SDGs. Due to the haze that clouded Sunway, the venue of the event this year changes from the usual football field to indoor JC hall, but that did not reduce the excitement for our Sunway students. This yearly event has always been one of the biggest events for Sunway so this year was definitely no exception!
