First and foremost, we, from Sunway Echo Media, would like to wish every Malaysian a Happy Independence Day! For this month’s Echo Eats, we thought of taking you, our dear readers, on a trip down memory lane; reminiscing on the wide array of savoury, sweet and cooling snacks you enjoyed whilst growing up in Malaysia (hopefully, spurring you to go on a hunt for them). Without further ado, let’s begin!

Echo Eats: Taste of Familiarity
Ever since the CMCO was lifted on June 9, with the recovery movement control order (RMCO) in effect beginning June 10, dining out in eateries is currently allowed. Therefore, eateries are now open for dine-in operations, provided that they continue to observe social distancing measures and adhere to relevant SOPs laid out by the government.
Within the 3 months spent under quarantine, our cravings would often slowly creep in and eventually get the best of us. It leaves our imaginations running wild and mouths salivating. While the option to order via food delivery service or take-away exists, the reality of the truth is, it’s undoubtedly less enjoyable. It pales in comparison to the authentic, actual dine-in experience.
Echo Eats: Hari Raya Edition
Following the live announcement made on May 10th by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the conditional movement control order (CMCO) will be extended to June 9. That is to say, it’s still best to avoid mass movements or gatherings if possible. Even our health DG, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, advises to avoid having visitors during Hari Raya celebrations. Therefore, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is obviously expected to be less exciting this time around as compared to previous years. However, looking on the bright side, some of us can find solace in the fact that we are still able to celebrate this occasion with our immediate family members.
Echo Eats: 5 Recipes You’ve Got to Try During Quarantine
Even with the Movement Control Order (MCO) in place leaving us with limited food options, one of the most common complaints from the MCO is that people have been overeating, oversnacking, and generally just eating at all hours of the day (what even is the distinction between snacks and meals anymore?). Despite the fact that most eateries are now only open until 8:00p.m. at the latest (that is, if they’re operating at all), people have found plenty of ways to keep their mouths busy. What with the MCO being extended until May 12th, Echo Eats is here to add fuel to the fire with our own five recommendations on recipes to try during this MCO to keep your tummy happy (and also to convince yourself that you were actually somewhat productive during this period).
Misconceptions About Fast Food
From a young age, society has been exposed to the concept of fast food and the culture surrounding it. Often, the two main features of fast food that we hone in on is 1) convenience and, 2) cheapness. After all, who wants to cook after a long day of working? Or who wants to bring the family with energetic children into a restaurant and wait half an hour for food to arrive? Between a full meal of fries, burger and drink; or a single plate of one food at the same price – we’re bound to choose the option that offers variety in the meal.
Today, however, despite the reputation living on, fast food is far from cheap, and sometimes, not very ‘fast’ either. So in this edition of Echo Eats I present to you: “fast food, and alternatives that are faster”.
College 101: Expectations vs Reality
Ah the new year, how most of us longed for it! To many, the start of the new year (and also a new decade) means new possibilities, resolutions that we won’t follow, and 2020 planners that we’ll forget about in 2 months. However, for many people (particularly those between the ages of 16-22) it also means starting college, and what better way to start off the new year than the dawning realisation that you’re entering a new and unfamiliar world of academia which will leave you in a puddle of your own tears and/or overdue assignments.

Christmas Treats
It’s that time of the year again. Every shopping mall you enter, every radio station you tune in to, the usual merry tone of Jingle Bells will be playing through the speakers.
Christmas is a time to gather for a potluck with family and friends, a time to return back to our hometowns to bask in the familiar comfort and warmth that only family somehow emanates. A time to unwind and relax, indulge in some good food (trust me, nobody cares about their diet plans at this point) and some Christmas treats!
Echo Eats: MyNews vs. Family Mart
The introduction of Family Mart to Malaysia on the 11th of November 2016 shook up the very foundations of our country. Never before had such a convenience store existed in Malaysia (*cough* broken slurpee machines *cough*). Warm bowls of oden, towering cones of matcha soft serve, prepackaged fresh cakes and pastries, unique brands of fruit tea, and calm seating spaces to boot! Say what you like about Japan, they sure know their stuff when it comes to convenience stores.
