“WELCOME TO THE LOSERS CLUB ***HOLE!” is among the tamer lines thrown out expertly by a gangly preteen in IT (2017) switching the entire theatre from bone chilling fear at the imminent death of beloved characters to hysterical giggles at the sheer pluck of these kids. So. you can imagine IT Chapter Two had a lot to live up to. That being said, IT Chapter Two, written by Gary Dauberman (notably the screenwriter for IT and Annabelle Comes Home) and directed once again by Andy Muschietti (who shall be directing the live-action adaptation of Attack on Titan!?) was fun, but bloated.
It’s definitely uncommon to see an English fiction book by a local author published and promoted on shelves of mainstream bookstores nationwide and even worldwide, even more so a book based on Malaysian history and culture! Hanna Alkaf has broken the boundaries of Malaysian literature with the skyrocketing international and local popularity of her first book, The Weight of Our Sky.
Back when Tinder first came out, it was met with much stigma. It went unsaid, but the only reason anyone would use Tinder is if they were lonely, desperate or sleazy. Since then, dating apps have seeped into mainstream use as they’re now simply a matter of practicality in this fast paced world.
The stakes are of course, lowered from the sky high heights Endgame brought us, but still enough to have us on the edge of our seats, truly feeling for this iteration of Peter’s plight.
Last weekend, we were treated to a night with the students of Diploma in Performing Arts from batch 2018, who showcased a series of 8 playlets, titled Once Upon a Time (Into the Future). The theme, “a collection of memories growing up”, was a whimsical and at times sombre contemplation of the past, present and future. The show featured acting, dancing, singing, shrieking (so much shrieking), and even a short silent video clip.
Good day to you sirs and madams alike! I’m back again with a spoiler-free movie review for Ant-Man and The Wasp, sequel to Ant-Man (2015) and Marvel’s latest money vortex to roll off the production line.
It’s a comedy, through and through, almost trying to swerve into rom-com territory but pulling back to make space for all the mandatory action sequences. Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly are cute as Ant-Man and The Wasp. They kick a lot of ass, but they’re cute as all hell while doing it. (Side note, why is the word ‘ass’ censored in cinemas but not, say, the ‘S’ or ‘B’ word?). Most of our laughs come from Luis, played by Michael Peña, as he plays the sidekick to the sidekick along with his own bunch of little sidekicks.
