Real Talk: Islamophobia

Lurking within the manifold layers of society is a kindling animosity that once ignited, may give rise to a destructive hate. This animosity goes by the name Islamophobia and has become a widely used term in political and social climates. In many countries, followers of Islam are often perceived as a collective “other”; a group of people who don’t quite belong or fit into society. Because of these ‘othering’ tendencies, Muslims are often subjected to intersectional microaggressions and hate crimes which may bring about many psychological impacts.

What Is A Caste System?

The term caste is described as a hereditary and endogamous community restricted to people of the same economic or occupational, spiritual, and social class. The concept stemmed from the Spanish, Italian and Portuguese words casta and casto, which hold the meaning of “race and lineage” and “pure or chaste”, respectively. Rebirth of Society

Rebirth of Society

When we reflect on our society, the most prominent thoughts that come to mind are ones revolving around social atrocities. The truth is, our contemporary society inherited a world that is still reeling from wars as well as economic, social, and environmental crises. The consequences of these circumstances became a normality in everyday life and seem unnecessary to be acknowledged as they are a part of us just as much as they are a part of the world. They make up our values, how we perceive the world, and determine the dreams that we willingly invest in. When confronted by these inevitable circumstances, there always exists two options: resistance or compliance. And what we choose to do with this damaged world is up to us; to either discard it or continue protecting it in hopes of a societal rebirth.

Book Review: The Evergreen Tea House by David T.K. Wong

Book Review: The Evergreen Tea House by David T.K. Wong

“The Evergreen Tea House” is a Hong Kong novel written by David T.K. Wong. It feels like a recollection of memories through a tumultuous period between the 1950s and the 1980s, with a multiple-perspective narration and intriguing characters. The book is namely set in Hong Kong, but the chapters also find themselves located in other countries like Taiwan and Peking (also known as Beijing as of present day). Though the book’s cover doesn’t seem like much, it actually highlights deep-rooted themes of politics, capitalism, traditions and culture.
