Sunway Big Talk
WHO IS SUNWAY BIG TALK?
Anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski noted in his essay that a great deal of talk does not serve any purpose of communicating ideas but establishes bonds of personal union. This concept holds the foundation for the fresh club that kicked off at the beginning of 2020-SUNWAY BIG TALK. ‘Human Connection’ is an important aspect that a simple conversation always fails to emphasize. Small talk, or better known by the Oxford Dictionary as a polite conversation about unimportant matters, does not fit the description to connect with people on a profound emotional and intellectual level.

The starting of this month isn’t exactly what everyone would’ve expected but with a heavy heart, Shay and Philix addressed a very important topic and explains what is actually going on behind the scenes. Sometimes it’s hard to get along with people despite trying your best. I know I’m being all cryptic but definitely watch this video so you’ll understand why it had to happen.

Beer & Skittles: Snowpiercer
Snowpiercer is an American, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi series about a perpetual-engine-train on which humanity must survive after the world has frozen to death. Its story is based on a 2013 film by the same name directed by Oscar winning ‘Parasite’ director Bong Joon-Ho. The film was originally based on an 1892 French graphic novel called Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob. The show went through a turbulent development phase to then be released to an onslaught of criticism for deviating from the original film’s plot. Despite this, it managed to garner decent popularity among its audience.
Echo Buzz: Not All Men but Every Single Woman
Trigger warning: Mention of R*pe and Sexual Violence
Short Story: Muse
The pale skinny boy in the photo looked foreign; dark curls, hard brown eyes, features etched into what seemed to be a permanent frown. Max sneaked a glance at the vanity mirror facing him; same physical traits and yet an entirely different person.
Colourism: Modern Society’s Plague
Described by Lupita Nyong’o as the “daughter of racism”, colourism has been plaguing societies for decades with its jarring prominence and its blatant inclination towards belittling darker skin to glorify whiter skin. The seemingly positive effects from the influx of recent self-acceptance and self-love related media is ruled out by colourism, which consistently undermines these self-acceptance messages by alluding that only certain types of skin tones are worthy of being accepted. This can’t help but make us wonder: why is darker skin still seen as an unprepossessing physical trait?
