The Clubs, Societies and Sports Awards Ceremony was held on the 21st of November to celebrate and reward the achievements of Sunway’s many clubs. As Malaysia’s #MostHappeningCampus, Sunway places a huge emphasis on providing students with a variety of clubs to cater to a spectrum of interests. Miss Amanda Chong from Student Life believes that clubs are an excellent platform for the development of useful social skills and talents, complementing academic knowledge learnt in the classroom. Students can also stand to widen their social circle through participating in clubs as they will meet people who share the same passions as them.
Prior to the event, guests congregated outside JC1 for registration. The Sunway College and University Student Council efficiently led guests to their respective places in the hall to ensure a smooth start for the evening. The charismatic emcee greeted guests with a short but resonating retelling of his experiences as an active participant in clubs, shaping him to be a more holistic individual. Then, Mr. Teh Kean Sing, representing the Director of Student Life, was invited to give the welcome speech of the event. He shared about the role of clubs in making Sunway an exciting place to study and reaffirmed Sunway’s commitment to forming new clubs next year, bringing the total to an impressive 88 clubs.
Next up was a very meaningful video presentation displaying pictures of every club and many spectacular achievements from Sunway throughout the past year. Guests tried to spot themselves in the hundreds of pictures shown, and one could feel a sense of pride seeing their own triumphs and joy experienced with their clubs immortalised in the images. A group photo was then taken with all guests to commemorate this special day.
The highlight of the event, the presentation of certificates and awards, began with Mr. Mok from the Sports Department of Student Life being invited to present the prizes. The members and committee of each club received certificates for their active participation and leaderships throughout the year. Awards for outstanding individuals and clubs were also given to recognise their meritorious achievements. With everyone feeling jubilant upon attaining their prizes, the event concluded on a high note.
There has never been a more exciting time to join clubs at Sunway. Many clubs that have been excelling on national and international levels show no signs of slowing down. The Sunway Debate Club which sent 4 teams to the National Intervarsity Debating Championship hopes to invite esteemed debaters to train their members and hopes to spread debate culture in Sunway. Meanwhile, the Sunway Cheerleading Team, a powerful force in the cheerleading scene, celebrated being honoured as the Most Outstanding Sports Club. They already have plans to send teams to international competitions in the coming year, hoping to add on to the many victories won already. The Sunway Esports Club reflected on an eventful year of development, with the CTRL-ALT Gaming Convention being their crown jewel. Events targeted at engaging Sunway students in gaming would be their focus for the future.
Joining a club is a good start in aiding one’s self development beyond academic learning. Miss Amanda encourages students to embrace their student life as there is so much potential to learn through clubs. Whether it is sports or languages, culture or photography, all clubs are a haven of interaction between different personalities who share common interests, making them a perfect place to achieve personal growth and make some great friends along the way.
