UN Rock the Goals Concert: Shine a Light on Sustainability

Rock The Goals – Malaysia’s Biggest United Nations Concert was held on the 25th of September 2019 in JC Hall, Sunway University. The concert was held to raise awareness towards the achievement of the 17 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in conjunction with the celebration of  the 4th anniversary of the 17 SDGs. Due to the haze that clouded Sunway, the venue of the event this year changes from the usual football field to indoor JC hall, but that did not reduce the excitement for our Sunway students. This yearly event has always been one of the biggest events for Sunway so this year was definitely no exception!

Superstitions VS Reality: What do we believe?

It’s October! The spookiest month of the year (at least, if you’re looking at it from a Westernized perspective). Here in Malaysia, Halloween isn’t that big of a thing, really. Aside from scoring tickets to Sunway Lagoon’s annual Nights of Frights and attending dress-up parties, there’s really not much of a Halloween culture here (i.e. trick or treating). But being so exposed to the Western culture of Halloween through social media, many of us know about Western superstitions like jack o’ lanterns, black cats, Friday the 13th and such. In Malaysia, we have our own unique, traditional superstitions from a background of diverse cultures, passed down from generation to generation.

Patefacio

On Thursday the 12th of September, a forum regarding the significance of social media in entrepreneurship and personal branding took place in GC Hall 3. The forum was organised by TedXSunwayUniversity with the intriguing Latin title ‘Patefacio’ which means ‘to disclose’ or ‘bring to light’. The panellists included a variety of characters with very different backgrounds and experiences, but all who are entrepreneurs capitalizing on social media presence in their own way.

Black Mirror Parallels: Is It Just Fantasy?

Black Mirror is an anthological TV series that fleshes out ⎯ in great realistic detail ⎯ the deep social repercussions of a technologically advanced society. It’s a show with movie-like episodes, each possessing wholly different stories while tackling specific social issues that are all too real. The hype around this spectacle of a show is not without reason; the charm and success of Black Mirror is special for it was crafted to be immune to the bog-standard remarks of critics such as: “it’s not that deep”, “it has no direction” or the biggest shark of the lot: “it’s a waste of time”. This Netflix original is relevant, timely and accurate to its audience (the upper-middle to upper class demographic).

5 Innovations Students Wish they Had

We’d hate to be stereotypical gadget-addicted youths, but the purpose of technology is to make our lives easier – and as students, we’re all ‘bout that life. Take the library’s facial recognition system for instance: gone are the days of awkwardly fishing through our bag pockets while someone standing behind us grumbles under their breath. We appreciate that Sunway is attending to our needs. With that, we’ve put together a Christmas list  compilation of tools that would save us time and energy, so that we can devote them to endeavors that truly matter – such as lining up for 5 hours to get free Sunway Lagoon passes.

IT Chapter Two: Movie Review

“WELCOME TO THE LOSERS CLUB ***HOLE!” is among the tamer lines thrown out expertly by a gangly preteen in IT (2017) switching the entire theatre from bone chilling fear at the imminent death of beloved characters to hysterical giggles at the sheer pluck of these kids. So. you can imagine IT Chapter Two had a lot to live up to. That being said, IT Chapter Two, written by Gary Dauberman (notably the screenwriter for IT and Annabelle Comes Home) and directed once again by Andy Muschietti (who shall be directing the live-action adaptation of Attack on Titan!?) was fun, but bloated.
