Getting your first job in uncertain times- a SAFE webinar

With most second-year students worrying about their job and internship opportunities in this pandemic, Sunway Actuarial and Financial Excellence (SAFE) organised a special webinar in collaboration with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Malaysia to give students tips on securing their first jobs in uncertain times like these. The webinar was held on Zoom on Friday (19th of June 2020) and Sunway students could join for free. So of course, Echo had to participate to get some valuable insights from the industry giants themselves.

Always Near, Never Far

“We may have our differences, but nothing’s more important than family.” – Miguel, from Coco

Eliyah let out a frustrated groan as she reached the front of the kitchen sink. She was about to begin the task of washing her lunch tupperware until her eyes caught sight of another similar tupperware, but of a different colour. While her one was a fiery brick red, the one in the sink was that of a steel blue.

‘Why can’t he just listen for once?’ she thought as she heaved a weary sigh, feeling irritation  creep into her system.

e-Cup of Coffee with Dr. Elizabeth Lee

Due to the rise of the recent pandemic along with strict rules and regulations from the government to stay at home, most of the events happening in Sunway Campus, unfortunately, had to be canceled or postponed. However, the pandemic didn’t stop Sunway from being the #MostHappeningCampus! Thanks to the advancement of technology, students and staff in Sunway had the chance to hear from Dr. Elizabeth Lee at Sunway’s first-ever e-Cup of Coffee with Dr. Elizabeth Lee on 18th June 2020 (Thursday). The session was held from 4.00 PM – 5.30 PM via Microsoft Teams with the goal of discussing all things related to the students’ and staff’s experience at Sunway University and Sunway College with Dr. Elizabeth.

Movies: How They Change Your Worldview

Of all the whimsical, hilarious and heartwarming lines in Wes Anderson’s ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, the one that kept my attention long after hearing it is this: “You can’t arrest him just because he’s a bloody immigrant, he hasn’t done anything wrong!”. This is said by M. Gustave, the high-class concierge of the hotel defending his son-like figure, Zero, who happens to be an immigrant in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka. Later on, frustrated that Zero hasn’t procured certain items, M. Gustave questions why Zero ever even left his country if he weren’t going to work his hardest to which Zero responds, “The war”. Immediately Gustave’s attitude flips, he softens, we soften with him.

Sunway’s Got Talent 2020

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, most public places were closed, and events were cancelled, including the highly anticipated Sunway’s Got Talent 2020. Sunway Echo Media interviewed Stella Wong and Jack Hoh from Sunway Student Ambassadors (SSA) to get more information on what the event could have looked like had it not been cancelled. Through this article, Sunway Echo Media hopes students of Sunway can appreciate the efforts of SSA while anticipating the return of Sunway’s Got Talent in the future!

Sunway SOLIDD: Real, Deep, Truth

Disclaimer: All opinions by interviewees do not reflect Sunway Echo Media’s stance in any form. This is purely raw insight into a Christian student ministry.

‘Real, Deep, Truth’ is what the members of Sunway SOLIDD (Serving our Lord in Dutiful Delight) hold on to as they meet up weekly to know more about God and life. Their values can be further elaborated as ‘Real Relationships, Deep Thinking, Truth First’. By putting truth first, they build real relationships and think deeply about the meaning of life together.

Monthly Musings : Unity

As July’s theme is Unity, we asked our writers the following prompt:

“What is the biggest sign of unity that you’ve seen in your life?”

Here’s what they had to say:

“I think the biggest sign of unity would be any form of protest in society. Like the Black Lives Matter movement. Or pride walks or any walk for women’s rights/equality. I just think it’s so incredible how people in this movement are together, and that they stand united no matter how violent it gets. Especially with the Black Lives Matter movement, I’ve seen how white people use themselves as shields against the police force to protect black protestors.”

Echo Eats: Taste of Familiarity

Ever since the CMCO was lifted on June 9, with the recovery movement control order (RMCO) in effect beginning June 10, dining out in eateries is currently allowed. Therefore, eateries are now open for dine-in operations, provided that they continue to observe social distancing measures and adhere to relevant SOPs laid out by the government.

Within the 3 months spent under quarantine, our cravings would often slowly creep in and eventually get the best of us. It leaves our imaginations running wild and mouths salivating. While the option to order via food delivery service or take-away exists, the reality of the truth is, it’s undoubtedly less enjoyable. It pales in comparison to the authentic, actual dine-in experience.

SU ENSEMBLE (RE:KINDLE 2.0)

As the COVID-19 infection has become more and more severe, Sunway University and College have been taking protective measures to close the entire campus until the Restricted Movement Order (RMO) is lifted to minimize the spread of COVID-19 infection. As a result, all clubs and societies events in Sunway campus have been canceled or postponed until further notice. Thus, this resulted in some clubs and societies in Sunway campus making some suitable changes to their events. So what happened to those club events? Fortunately, an insight of the initial plans for the Sunway Ensemble Re:kindle 2.0 is provided by Sunway University Ensemble (SUE)! In this article, they explained how RMO has affected their club, events and how they handle such problems.
