Clubs & Societies Award Ceremony (15th November 2017)

Ms Lee Siok Ping (Director of Student LIFE) began the Clubs and Societies ceremony award with an opening speech, acknowledging the events organised by the clubs this year. Sunway University has 86 clubs with many new clubs being added on every year. Also, Sunway University Student Council has completed a constitution for all clubs to abide by. The event was attended by about 138 club representatives and 11 advisors. The representatives were from the following clubs for example,  Sun-U Choir, Sunway University Islamic Society, Sunway Society of  Law,  Philosophy & Economics, Sunway Actuarial & Financial Excellence Society and many more.

 

The room was filled with chattering voices as everyone eagerly waited to see who will be the recipients of the awards for the year. As the voices settled down, the emcee, Sashvini Naidu took the stage and started by announcing the winners of the sports club. Sunway Athletics won 29 medals in SIGMA and emerged as champions in MASISWA. The chess club won 10 medals in external tourneys this year, Sunway Frisbee Club and Sunway Badminton Club also held successful tourneys.

Next, the Emcee called Ms Lee to present the certificates to almost all the clubs who have attended. After that, it was time to present the Outstanding Individual Awards 2017 – Clubs & Societies, and Sports categories. In the clubs & societies category, Lim Yen Mei, Chua Vi Sern and Chanan Loh Zhuo Ern received awards for their outstanding leadership, Ooi Hui Ping and Chan Mei Yen received awards for being the ultimate team players. Woon Wei Shun and See Wei Hong received awards for being the best community service initiators, Karanbir Singh Hundal received an award for being a high achiever and lastly, Ishaq Bin Jaffree received an award for impressive originality and creativity.

In the sports category, Joanavene Tan Qie Ven was the recipient of the outstanding sports leadership award. Dhivya Kannasamy received an award for being the best team player and Siti Fatimah binti Mohamed Abdulla Inamulla received an award for being the captain of the year.

Group awards were the next event for the day – Outstanding Club 2017 (Clubs & Societies, and Sports). In the clubs & societies category, The Sunway University Chinese Cultural Society Club (SUCCS) won the Most Outstanding Club 2017 and they received RM 500 extra club funds for next year’s usage. Asides from that, there were consolations given out as well. Sunway Analytics Society (SAS), Sunway Actuarial and Finance Excellence (SAFE), Victoria University Business Club (VUBC), Sunway Accounting and Commerce Society (ACS) and Chinese Independent School Alumni (CISA) received consolation places which worth RM200 of extra club funds next year’s usage.

In the sports category, Taekwondo Club bagged the Most Outstanding Club 2017 and they too received RM500 club funds. Consolation places were Frisbee club, Badminton club, Yoga club, Swimming club and lastly, Dodgeball club. They received RM 200 club funds.

Overall, the Clubs and Societies award ceremony was truly a memorable event as everyone rejoiced in happiness over how far Sunway University has developed since 1987 and the variety of clubs and societies that allow students to pursue their interests, broaden their network and gain a lot of experience from these clubs and societies.
