On the 18th of June (Sunday), from 7.30am to 11.00am, the streets of Sunway City will come alive with the spirit of compassion, unity, and hope as participants and volunteers gather for Sunway’s Multiple Sclerosis Walk. This inspiring event, which is a collaboration between the Rotaract Club of Sunway University and the Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway, aims to increase awareness about multiple sclerosis and raise funds to support those affected by this challenging autoimmune disease.

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibres, resulting in various symptoms such as numbness, temporary paralysis, and coordination difficulties. This unpredictable condition can strike people of all ages, and the wide range of symptoms often makes it difficult for patients to identify the disease. It could take up to five years for people to receive a proper diagnosis, which further highlights the urgency of raising awareness of MS.

Goals for MS Walk

This year’s walk marks the 10th anniversary of the event, reflecting a decade of dedication towards the cause. The MS Walk has grown in popularity and significance over time by engaging the local community and fostering a sense of unity and empathy.

More than just a physical activity, the Multiple Sclerosis Walk is a sign of unity and support. By taking part in this event, individuals become a part of a community which is committed to improving and making a difference in the lives of those affected by MS.

Raising awareness and educating Malaysians of all ages about multiple sclerosis and its effects is one of the main objectives of the MS Walk. One may become an advocate — helping to educate others about the symptoms and challenges associated with multiple sclerosis — through participating in the event. The role of an advocate is incredibly important to dispel stereotypes and misconceptions about MS. Every step increases understanding and brings us closer to a society that is informed, empathetic, and supportive of people living with MS.

The MS Walk brings together people from all walks of life — forging connections and fostering a sense of community. Just because someone is aware of MS or has a loved one impacted by the condition, it doesn’t really mean that they truly understand what multiple sclerosis is about. Therefore, the event not only enables participants with MS to connect with individuals who share similar experiences and challenges by creating a support network that can provide comfort, advice, and understanding, but it also allows others to learn about the struggles and experiences faced by MS patients. This walk offers them a chance to better understand the illness, strengthen bonds, and inspire hope and resilience. By doing so, a more understanding, empathetic and inclusive society for individuals with MS can be fostered.

The walk also acts as a fund-raising platform for Malaysia’s multiple sclerosis community. These resources will support MS research, services and initiatives that directly assist MS patients. It is important to note that this is a 100% charity event, with every ringgit raised going towards making a positive impact in the lives of MS patients.

Additionally, the event is a celebration of resilience and determination, providing an opportunity to create hope alongside multiple sclerosis patients. By walking alongside individuals living with MS, their families and supporters, participants become a part of a collective journey towards hope. Each step taken during the walk represents a commitment to never give up, to continue moving forward in the face of obstacles, and to embrace a future where MS is better understood and managed.

As the walk is concurrent with Father’s Day, the event organisers hope that it would be  a chance for families to  strengthen their bonds.

Everything You Need to Know About the Event

What can participants anticipate on the day of the walk? The event promises to be a vibrant and memorable experience for all. The walk will commence at Sunway University, taking participants on a scenic route through Sunway City.

There are two routes for participants:

  1. The 5KM walk

All participants will be following the 5KM route, starting at Sunway University. Participants will begin heading towards Sunway Medical Centre, which is located nearby. From there, they will continue walking towards Sunway Pinnacle. After passing Sunway Pinnacle, participants will proceed towards South Quay. Upon reaching South Quay, they will then make their way back to campus, passing through the futsal field and Monash University — completing the 5KM loop.

  1. The 2KM walk

This year, the Multiple Sclerosis Walk is opening a 2KM category to accommodate the needs of the elderly, disabled, and those with special health conditions. Similar to the first route, the starting point is at Sunway University. However, participants on this route will make a U-turn upon reaching Sunway Medical Centre and head back towards the university campus — completing a 2KM loop.

There will be water and toilet stations conveniently placed along the route to cater to the participants’ needs. Participants will also have to adhere to the safety measures so that they can enjoy a smooth  flow of events.

After the walk, there will be engaging performances, delicious food, music, an MS gallery showcasing stories of resilience, and various MS-themed activities. Participants can also avail themselves of health screenings and stand the chance to win exciting prizes through lucky draws.

Join MS Walk

On the 1st and 2nd of June, a promotional booth was set up to promote the event, with discounts entitled only to Sunway students to encourage registration. Individual registrations qualified for a 10% discount, while group registrations qualified for a 15% discount.

The success of the Multiple Sclerosis Walk relies heavily on the dedicated volunteers who selflessly contribute their time and efforts. A team of passionate individuals — including members from the Sunway Student Volunteers, Sunway Student Ambassadors, and public volunteers — will be present to ensure the event’s success. Additionally, Rotaract Club members will participate as both volunteers and participants of the walk.

Over the years, the MS Walk has witnessed a growing number of participants, and this year, the Rotaract Club aims to reach a turnout of 700 participants. They hope to engage more members of the public, especially high school students and young adults, in the walk for a great cause.

So, join MS Walk and let’s walk to greater hope.
